Skyler and Blake adopt their first rescue. Mom told the kids that when they moved to their new house they could adopt a puppy and that's just what they did. Skyler and Blake adpted a husky/retreiver mix puppy from Wight-Way Rescue. She is so cute. They named her Dakota.

Hope, Blake and I headed for Emergency Animal Treatment Center for another set of x-rays and a urinalysis.

Hope is waiting for Dr. Sandman to come in with the x-ray results.

Dr. Sandman couldn't have been happier. Hope is growing new bone where the cancer/injury was. Everything looks really good.

Hope won't need to have another check up on her leg for 6 months!

Hope did have cloudy urine, so we'll know Friday what if anything is going on.

UPDATE
Hope had another set of x rays to determine if the benign cancer is continuing to deteriorate her bone or not. Great News! No additional deterioration and Dr. Sandman thinks it may even look better.

Additional Clarification about benign cancer:

It is uncommon for a benign process to become malignant. It usually takes a long time to do. Many times when we see a bx come back as benign and then have it come back as malignant later on it is because the first sample didn't get down to the real answer. That is always a possibility. With Hope, her bone is not progressing like aggressive malignant cancers typically do, so that is a good thing for her!!

Thank you Dr. Sandman!!

October 18, 2006
UPDATE FROM PATHOLOGIST:
True to form, the Drs. have not seen this before. They think Hope has benign cancer as opposed to malignant cancer. What this means is that the cancer is non spreading. There will not be any need for cancer treatment such as chemo therapy, or radiation. But what it may do is destroy the bone locally. Hope's bone may continue to lose density and be replaced with cartilage. The cartilage is soft and will make her bone softer and more prone to injuries, such as a broken bone.

So, for now Hope will have more x rays taken next week to determine if more of the bone has been destroyed or not. Dr. Sandman indicated that she has seen this type of cancer get better on it's own. We will have to take each day one at a time.

If anyone can get through this it's Hope. Please continue to have Hope in your prayers and thoughts. It means everything to know you all are cheering her on.

October 9, 2006
Hope had an awesome therapy session today. She worked really hard and has improved even tho she has the injury to her hock.

UPDATE:
Hope woke up from her nap and WALKED UNASSISTED ACROSS THE ROOM!!!!!! And to think some people said she'd never walk!

October 3, 2006
Now that we can think about something else, we would like to thank Skin Deep Medical Spa for planning an running our Evening of Beauty. We all had a wonderful, relaxing time.

Check out our first annual spa fund raiser photos.

Dr. Sandman called with the results from Hope's biopsies. Great News! Hope DOES NOT have an infection, DOES NOT have an autoimmune disease, and DOES NOT have cancer. The spots on Hope's xrays seem to be due to a trauma to her hock. Dr. Sandman will be speaking to the pathologist tomorrw. More information to follow.

September 28, 2006
Hope went in to AETC and had the fluid around her leg as well as the bone biopsied. We won't know anything until Tuesday. Please keep Hope in your prayers and thoughts.

September 26, 2006
The radiologist and Dr. Sandman want Hope to come in for a bone tap. She will extract some of the fluid around the bone and send it to the lab. This will hopefully tell us more information.

September 22, 2006
Hope went in for x-rays today. As Dr. Sandman stated, "Nothing is straightforward with Hope". She has dark spots on the bone. Dr. Sandman will confer with a radiologist. At this point it could possibly one of 2 conditions. Hope could have an autoimmine disease or she could have a deep bone infection. We will know more in a few days.

September 6, 2006
I took Hope to Animal Emergency and Treatment Center because the swelling in her hock hadn't gone down. The Dr. gave Hope antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. If her hock doesn't improve in 2 weeks she will need to have an x-ray. Let's "Hope" for the best.

September 2, 2006
During therapy, Jeanine noticed Hope's hock was swollen. We will be icing Hope's leg for a few days to see what happens.

Hope's had her surgical re-evaluation by Dr. Sandman. Amazed by her progress, Dr. Sandman is going to turn Hope loose for a while. She said as long as Hope isn't in any pain or that that the placement of her hips are not interfering with her progress, she sees no reason at this point to operate on her other hip. The only thing slowing Hope down at this point is not being able to bend her ankle on the leg with the muscle tie down. This may need to be fused in the future so she can better take her steps without her foot getting caught and knuckling under.

Let's all keep our "paws" crossed for her.

June 5, 2006
Hope took many steps today. Her balance is improving. Hope is a little dynamo!

Watch Hope walk!

May 23, 2006
Hope's therapy gets better every week. Today she took 3 steps! Now she needs to work on taking bigger steps.

Hope will see her surgeon, Dr. Sandman in June to see if she will need another surgery. Keep your fingers crossed!

We're back from Spring Break.

The most amazing thing happened today in PT. Hope took 2, count 'em 2, steps on her own, UNASSISTED. AND she picked up her leg and her foot didn't knuckle under as she put it down!

Hope has come so far since she started. She works so hard and it's paying off!

Continued thanks goes to Jeanine and Dr. Christine and Dr. Sandman for believing in Hope and her ability when so many others didn't!

Great News! DynaSplint Systems has donated the dynasplints for Hope. She was fitted for them yesterday. Hope will wear the splint for 8-10 hours a day. This will stretch out her muscle tie down.

You are AWESOME! Thanks so much!

March 1, 2006
We took Hope for a recheck with her surgeon, Dr. Sandman. She said that Hope is doing very well. She'd like to have Hope have more therapy and be in her cart for a month or so and then she'll conference with TOPS before we schedule her next surgery.

Hope has alot of work ahead of her, but with her will she'll do great!

February 27, 2006
Today Hope had her first hydro therapy.

Hope walked by herself! It was so exciting. Does this girl have a will or what!

We also have some awesome news, Eddies Wheels has generously donated a cart for Hope. They are hand making it and it will arrive in about 2 weeks.

Thank You from the bottom of our hearts!

February 20, 2006
Hope's therapy went great today. Jeanine said she can really feel her quads working. Lisa asked her if she thought Hope would walk. Jeanine's response:

YAH!!

Hope's Wish List:

Hope continues to need your support. She needs dyna splints for her left leg that has the muscle tie down. The splints would be worn at night to stretch out her muscles. The dyna splint has a cost of $300/month. She would probably only need the splint for one month.

She also needs a cart. Using the cart would teach her brain that the front and back end should be working together. It helps develop her hip and stomach muscles. The cost of a cart would be around $300-350.

Hope will also be getting her next surgery in a few weeks. We have a large portion of the surgeon's fee but she still need a few hundred more.

The people that have donated to Hope have been the ones that have gotten her to where she is today. Any donation you can give to Hope would be so greatly appreciated!

We thank you all so much!

February 14, 2006
Hope has been adopted by...her foster mom! I couldn't stand her not being mine another minute.

Please continue to support Hope and follow her continued success.

UPDATE:

Dr. Sandman took current x-rays of Hope's legs. The broken head of the left leg had slipped down and healed to the side of the neck.

Her right femoral neck has an apple core appearance, perhaps from loss of blood supply to the area.

It was decided to admit Hope for surgery today.

Dr. Sandman takes Hope to prepare for surgery.

Dr. Sandman, "This is the right thing to do!"

Surgery went well and Hope is resting comfortably.

February 2, 2006
This afternoon Hope has her surgery consult with Dr. Sandman at Animal Emergency & Treatment Center. If all goes well, she'll have her first surgery tomorrow, Friday Feb.3.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Today Hope is getting her first EMS treatment. Pulses of electricity contract her muscles. It's so cool to see her muscles move.

It doesn"t appear she has any neurological damage because her muscles are responding well.

Hope continues to improve weekly under the awesome direction of Jeanine.

Her muscles are developing nicely and flexion is continuing to improve.

Hope had her first physical therapy session today at TOPS Veterinary Rehabilitation in Grayslake. It was so exciting! Our therapist Jeanine, was awesome. She was so patient with all of our questions and taught us how to do Hope's physical therapy at home.

Hope has voluntary movement. She was trying to walk. Because Hope has never walked, she think scooting is walking. Her brain needs to be retrained the "correct" way to walk.

Hope worked very hard. We're so proud of her!

Jeanine's Bio:

Jeanine graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1998 with a Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy and a minor in biological sciences. Since graduating from NIU she worked one year treating adult patients in acute inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and post-orthopedic surgery patients. For the next 4 years she specialized in pediatric physical therapy. She has completed numerous continuing education courses and is neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) certified in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy. Currently Jeanine is a graduate student at the Finch University of Health Sciences / The Chicago Medical School, pursuing her transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Jeanine is also pursuing her Certificate in Canine Rehabilitation through the Animal Rehabilitation Institute. Jeanine is thrilled to be working alongside the staff at TOPS where she is able to combine her two passions; her love of canines with the principles of physical therapy.

Jeanine's primary responsibility is the treatment and supervision of treatment of those activities taking place in our therapy room. These activities include: therapeutic exercises, hydro-treadmill, electromedical horizontal therapy, aquatic bioelectric therapy, land-treadmill therapy, cryo- and heat therapy, massage, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and therapeutic ultrasound.

Hope wishes all her friends "Hope" for the New Year!

December 7, 2005
Hope had her neurological review. The results were inconclusive and left us with few answers. At this point, we felt it necessary to clarify our available options with Dr. Bernard Pare', an orthopedic specialist at the Animal Specialty Clinic in Buffalo Grove. Dr. Pare' ran a battery of blood tests ruling out many types of infections and muscular dystrophy. Hope's tests were all negative. He did feel however that Hope had more damage than just orthopedic and was unsure if her disease was progressive in nature or not. After weighing our options and asking Hope what she thought, we agreed to start physical therapy at TOPS Veterinary Rehab in Grayslake. Our goal is to build on what she has as far as muscle and strength, stabilize he hip/thigh and stomach muscles and prepare her for a possible femoral hip repair in 5 or 6 weeks. It is felt that the surgery will not heal her but would in fact give her a better quality of life and possibly would give her the the use of a third leg and relieve some tension in her fourth leg.

From this we will begin to build.

November 12, 2005
Hope visited Tops Veterinary Rehabilitation. Dr. Christine Jurek's evaluation was that Hope has a high degree of ability and her lack of mobility may be completely musculoskeletal in origin. If that's the case, pursuing surgery may be in her best interest and may ultimately result in a functionally normal lifestyle (best case scenario). Dr. Jurek said
"There's hope for Hope"!

Hope has a consultation with the neurologist November 29 to assess the degree (if any) of neurologic dysfunction in her rear limbs..

Hope Gets Her Wheels
By Sandy Kamen Wisniewski

Tuesday, October 18, Tricia, Laurie, Bonnie and I went to the Chicago City Pound on behalf of Animal Education and Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets and people. We were there to pick up some homeless dogs and foster them until we could find permanent homes for them. After deciding which dogs we would rescue, we headed for the exit, dogs in tow, when the director of the shelter approached me and asked me if we could take a special needs puppy. She went on to explain that the puppy was paralyzed in her back legs. I asked her to show me the pup. Turning, I followed her through a maze of doors and hallways to the medical ward.

An adorable, 6-pound brown terrier mix puppy was brought in the room in the arms of a vet tech and placed on the floor. Like a jumping bean the little pup began running around the room at full blast. She was dragging her back.

My first thought was, “oh this poor thing.” But I soon realized there was no reason to feel sorry for her, she didn’t. Her zest for life was obvious. The director told me that no rescue group had come forward and she's, “rotting away in medical.” I scooped her up, torn because I knew I couldn't personally take her home because of all my dogs. Who will take her? I thought to myself. I said, “let's bring her up front for my friends to see.”

I carried her to where my friends stood and they responded to seeing her with oooh's and ah's at the cute, little puppy I held in my arms. I said, "now wait a minute, you have to see this." I put her down and she began hopping and scooting, chasing one of the other dogs – which looked at her like, "what the heck?" They gasped seeing her drag back legs, but then noticing her fighting spirit they giggled at the spunky pup who was still terrorizing a big lab, who was trying desperately to get away from her.

"What do I do?" I asked them. "I don't want to leave her." There was a pause, as we all looked at each other, grief stricken. Tricia, one of our volunteer foster mom’s said, "I'll take her." We all looked at her, our eyes wide with surprise. I said, "Are you sure?" She said, "Oh, yeah, I'm sure."
On the ride back home we named the pup Hope. We felt there was indeed hope for this dog so the name suited her perfectly. We took her to the vet right away. The vet said that it is her hips that don't work, she was born with the defect, and it is likely she will never walk.

24 hours later thanks to Lisa, one of our handy volunteers, a cart has been built with wheels in the back that will work as Hope’s back legs. Today we fitted her in her cart and strapped her in. She looked all around, her bright brown eyes seeing the world in a brand new way. She backed up ten steps. We all laughed and Tricia said, “Wrong way baby.” With some coaxing Hope took her first steps forward.
